Mint has come a long way over the years and has jumped beyond that of the sauce for a Sunday lamb roast. Although it is mostly associated with sweets, mint is making an appearance in many more categories than ever before including salads, dressings, beverages, soups and rubs.
Christmas is also the season for peppermint and gingerbread flavourings, with mint being heavily featured in confectionery, in particular the beloved and iconic candy canes. (Fun folklore fact, the candy cane 'hook' is a result of the choirmaster asking for the sticks to be turned into the shape of a cane to look more like a shepherd's cane, there is, however, little evidence to back this up factually.)
Mint is a generalised term to describe the flavour, however, there are key differences between mints. Spearmint is a milder flavour making it ideal for savoury dishes, whereas Peppermint has its own unique flavour profile and is typically found in sweeter applications.
Mint leaves also lend themselves to the perfect garnish on both alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages, heading into the summer drinks season, this hardworking leaf deserves a turn in the spotlight.
Peppermint tea is the second best-selling herbal component in tea, and peppermint oil is the most widely used essential oil in existence (the Ancient Greeks believed it could even cure hiccups).

Lewis Road’s Double Mint & Dark Chocolate flavour combines natural peppermint and spearmint extracts with decadent dark chocolate flakes and uses a churning process that minimises air in the ice cream to deliver an ultra-creamy texture.
Having already had a Dark Chocolate and Mint ice cream in the range that is much loved by ardent fans, the team at Lewis Road Creamery didn't want to take away from that in tweaking the recipe. But, as the new base was creamier and more scoopable, it was already on an upward trajectory. Curiosity did get the better of the team, however, and they decided to add in a couple of mints from the menthe family of peppermint and spearmint extracts. With these comes a double fresh sensation.
The all-new ultra-creamy ice cream base has a supreme mouthfeel, not too much air or ice, and just the right amount of decadence, something the team believe that makes Lewis Road Creamery ice cream, one of the best in the world.
This decadent twist on an iconic Kiwi flavour of ice cream has also recently taken out top honours at this year's NZ Ice Cream Awards being crowned the winner "Supreme Boutique Champion".
