BIKEAROUND ASSISTS DEMENTIA

Tech company Camanio Care has cleverly combined the use of a stationary bike and Google Street View to create a memory-boosting device for dementia patients.

As it is a challenge for many elderly people with Alzheimer's to remember where they have been, BikeAround assists by virtually taking its users down a road they have visited in the past.

According to Anne-Christine Hertz, manager at Health Technology Centre of Halland, pairing mental and physical stimulation with images of familiar places, BikeAround has the ability to improve memory.

"Scientists think this kind of pairing produces dopamine in the brain and has the potential to affect memory management in a profound way," said Hertz.

As well as aiding memory and spatial awareness, the bike is said to provide stimulating physical and mental exercise in a safe manner.
