Addressing Workforce Challenges

AUSTRALIA | RSL LifeCare has responded to challenges facing its workforce, including traineeships for women and mentorships for new nursing graduates.

Some of the ways RSL LifeCare are addressing workforce challenges include its Empowering Women, Supporting Veterans and Seniors program, where aged care traineeships are offered to women in Merimbula, Port Macquarie, Dubbo, Narrandera, Condobolin, Nowra, and Wagga Wagga.

Up to 40 participants will receive formal training toward a nationally recognised qualification, alongside paid placements that allow them to earn while they learn. The program includes wraparound support tailored to the realities of regional life, such as transport assistance, digital tools for remote learning, and personalised mentoring.

RSL LifeCare also provide new nursing graduates with mentorship, tailored training, and resources to support their transition into the aged care sector. This initiative has achieved an industry-leading 90 percent retention rate among recent graduate registered nurses. Its mid-year intake is almost at capacity in many locations, such as Canberra and on the NSW North Coast.

Other initiatives include offering 100 percent funding for participating certifications and free access to over 500 AUSMED clinical e-learning programs to support continuous professional development, enhancing team member wellbeing through salary packaging benefits, retail discounts, access to fitness programs, and counselling sessions, and annual events to recognise team members for their service and educational achievements, fostering a culture of appreciation and professional growth.

Beyond job roles, the aged care sector offers Gen Z workers a chance to develop essential life skills.

"It's taught me how to speak in a mature and respectful manner and helped me want to be something more than I was," Gen Z worker Paige O’Raffety shared.

Such experiences resonate with Gen Z's desire for personal growth and meaningful work.

While we embrace Aged Care Employee Day on 7 August, every single day is an opportunity to recognise our incredible team.

"Across residential care, home care, retirement living and veteran services, our team members are the backbone of our organisation,” added RSL LifeCare CEO Janet Muir.

“As we work to evolve with the sector and uphold the highest standards of care for veterans and seniors, our team members are our greatest asset.”
