UK | The UK Government's plan to place undergraduate nursing students within adult social care facilities has been welcomed by industry leaders.
Care England has welcomed the Government’s new strategy to embed adult social care students within undergraduate nursing degrees.
The move will give student nurses structured, routine access to placements in residential care, supported living and home care settings, providing vital experience in community-based care and helping to shape the workforce needed for the future of health and care.
“We are proud to have long championed the inclusion of adult social care within nursing education, and today’s strategy marks a vital and visionary step forward which we wholeheartedly support. Nursing in social care is uniquely complex, skilled, and deeply human; it demands clinical expertise, leadership, and compassion in equal measure,” said Professor Martin Green OBE, Chief Executive of Care England.
Professor Green added that student nurses were an integral part of the national health system, and would provide valuable experiences for future nurses to have a first hand, realistic working experience in aged care environments, focused on caring for seniors.
“By offering student nurses meaningful placements in care homes, supported living, and home care, we open their eyes to the reality of integrated, person-centred care delivered at the heart of communities.”
Professor Green said that these plans introduced by the Government have allowed operators and national programs to build a sustainable workforce heading into the future. This will allow future generations to retire with the same level of care given to those who went before them.
“These experiences will not only enrich their training but inspire many to see adult social care as the rewarding and impactful career it truly is. This is how we build a confident, connected, and compassionate workforce for the future; and we welcome this bold commitment to making that future a reality.”
