Hamilton carehome, Radius Glaisdale, has celebrated Philippine Independence Day by bringing residents together to share Philippine culture.

Residents, staff, and families at Radius Glaisdale in Hamilton recently came together to celebrate Philippine Independence Day. With more than 20 Filipino employees at Radius Glaisdale, the celebration was a meaningful opportunity that brought people together to share culture, food and joy.

It all began with a warm welcome from the facility manager and Diversional Therapy team, followed by a rendition of the Philippine national anthem sung by staff. It was warmly received and quite emotional.

Wearing traditional Filipino attire, staff members performed cultural dances including Tinikling and Cariñosa, which they had spent hours rehearsing. Their energy and enthusiasm lit up the room and brought big smiles to the audience.

Around 90 people gathered in the lounge to take part in the festivities.

“My husband usually keeps to himself, so it was such a lovely surprise to see him joining the celebration. I’m so glad I popped in,” said one resident’s wife.

Radius Glaisdale’s maintenance man also made a special ice cream cart. Designed to resemble the iconic carts found across the Philippines, it quickly became a favourite photo spot. Everyone enjoyed a delicious feast prepared by staff, and cupcakes in the colours of the Philippine flag added a festive touch.

“The day was filled with meaningful exchange, celebrating not only Philippine independence but also the shared sense of home and diversity at the heart of Radius Glaisdale,” said Alicia de Kort from the activities coordinator team.
