Ryman Names Next Village after Sir Richard Hadlee

Cricket legend Sir Richard Hadlee has been honoured by Ryman, naming its planned Northwood Village after the sporting icon.

Ryman Healthcare has named its new Northwood retirement village in honour of one of New Zealand’s most accomplished sporting legends, Sir Richard Hadlee.

Sir Richard Hadlee (born in Christchurch in 1951) is widely regarded as one of the finest fast bowlers and all-rounders in cricket history. He made his Test debut for New Zealand in 1973 and quickly became the spearhead of our national side’s bowling attack.

Over an illustrious career, he became the first cricketer in the world to take 400 Test wickets, achieving the milestone in 1990. He also scored more than 3,000 Test runs, including two centuries, cementing his status as an allrounder of rare calibre.

One of his most memorable performances came in the 1985–86 series in Australia, where he took 33 wickets in three Tests, including a remarkable 9 for 52 in Brisbane, a spell widely considered one of the greatest in the history of the game.

Sir Richard was knighted in 1990 for services to cricket and has continued to serve the sport as a mentor, selector, and international ambassador.

Ryman Healthcare Chief Executive Naomi James said it was such a privilege for Ryman to name its Northwood village after Sir Richard.

“Sir Richard is a New Zealand legend whose achievements were known by people around the world, but he has always remained a proud Cantabrian. He inspired a generation of budding cricketers and his dedication, humility, and excellence reflect our Ryman values,” she said.

“It is such an honour for us to have his name associated with our Northwood village and to continue his legacy through the community our residents and team are building there.”

Ryman has named its villages after significant New Zealanders for more than 25 years. Other New Zealand namesakes include Sir Edmund Hillary, Bruce McLaren, James Wattie and most recently Sir Patrick Hogan.

The residents and team members at Ryman’s Richard Hadlee Village have already established a warm, welcoming and thriving community, with construction of the remaining parts of the village well underway. The village centre, including care and serviced apartments, is nearing completion and due to open in the second half of this year.

Once complete, the village will offer a full range of living and care options, including independent living, serviced apartments, and care beds across resthome and hospital-level care. Residents will also be able to enjoy amenities such as a café, movie theatre, village centre, gym, all nestled amongst a beautifully landscaped setting.
