Speeding Motorists a Worry for Whakatane Village

Motorists taking advantage of a quiet street in Whakatane have residents of the local retirement village worried as they have already witnessed some near misses over the past year.

Residents living at Golden Pond Retirement Village and Hospital on Pohutu Street have revealed that some people take advantage of the lack of traffic to travel at speed along the road.

Golden Pond property manager, Tina Everton, has presented a petition from residents and staff to Whakatāne District Council last week asking for speed humps to be installed.

Pohutu Street does not have a footpath on the hospital side of the street, so people using mobility scooters, wheelchairs, or other mobility aids such as walking frames, need to cross the road to get around town.

Council strategy and asset management team leader Ann-Elise Reynolds said the council could look at putting something in temporarily with a more long-term solution going into the next long-term plan.

Mayor Judy Turner said it was a very fair request and complimented the Golden Pond residents on taking the action.
